Cholesterol isn't all bad. It's an essential fat which the cells in your body need. Cholesterol also allows our bodies to produce vitamin D, and makes up bile acids.
There are two types of cholesterol:
High-density lipoprotein - HDL or "good" cholesterol which picks up excess cholesterol and takes it back to your liver.
Low-density lipoprotein - LDL or "bad" cholesterol that transports cholesterol particles throughout your body.
However, the problems occur when you have too much cholesterol, which starts to build up in your arteries and form plaque. As plaque builds up inside the artery, it can make it difficult for blood to flow and can lead to a condition called atherosclerosis - also known as “the hardening of the arteries.”
Therefore, if you want to avoid atherosclerosis, the first step is to remove from your diet the following foods high in cholesterol:
#1 Beef, brain, cooked – 3100mg/100g (1033%DV)
