Find out which sweetener is better erythritol or stevia in taste and cooking as well the health benefits.
Erythritol vs Stevia facts
Erythritol is in a category of compounds called carbohydrates or sugar alcohols which taste sweet but don’t contain many calories. It is found in small amounts in some fruits and fermented foods. This includes sake, wine, watermelons, beer, grapes, pears, and soy sauce. When erythritol is used in sugar-free foods and beverages, it’s most likely made from fermented corn.
The current studies have failed to find a link between erythritol and any changes in triglycerides, cholesterol, or carbohydrate metabolism. Used as a natural sweetener, erythritol is about 60 – 80 percent as sweet as sucrose.
This sugar alcohol has been approved for use as a food additive in the US since 2001. It was first discovered in 1848 by a Scottish chemist named John Stenhouse.
The stevia plant has been used for more than 1,500 years by the Guaraní people. In traditional medicine in these regions, stevia also served as a treatment for colic, burns, stomach problems.
Stevia is a 100 percent natural, zero calorie sweetener with a number of health benefits which have been confirmed in human studies. It’s made from a leaf related to popular garden flowers like asters and chrysanthemums.
It is naturally very sweet and considered 100 to 200 times sweeter than sugar. The sweetness of the stevia leaves is caused by 8 glycosides contained within them.

- downbntout: The claims here about stevia and oral health: That is a wild amt of wishful thinking. Unless you want to show me what science you're seeing, with substantiation? Sure, ppl, swish with stevia water and see if there's no film on yr teeth in a week. Btw, dyk that dentistry is gradually dropping the word plaque? It never did refer to the hard chalky stuff. The word is now biofilm. Edit: typo
- Jacob Yoder: Such fine print is almost impossible to read even when I have it on full screen. Please use bigger letters.
- Lee Jones: It's supposed to be a video so I don't have to fucking read it!
- Rae KC: Would be a bitter video if had someone reading this so you can "listen" while working!
