Blue-green algae are microscopic, plant-like organisms which usually occur naturally in rivers, ponds, streams, and lakes. They were one of the 1st oxygen-producing bacteria on earth and are largely responsible for the evolution of the planets ecosystem.
They are also known as cyanobacteria (and pond algae) but scientists used to call them blue-green algae, however, they are prokaryotes and the term "algae" in modern times refers to eukaryotes.
The most researched of this type of algae is spirulina, that is a storehouse of minerals, vitamins, and protein.
Furthermore, cyanobacteria is a good source of an essential amino acid, named - arginine, that is known to build muscle tone. Moreover, it contains all essential amino acids, as well as some magnesium copper, potassium, and zinc.
Using these algae provides strong anti-aging and positive effects for both the skin and the hair. In addition, it contains a high concentration of strong antioxidants which may boost the immune system.
Spirulina is also rich in gamma-linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid that aids in the health of the heart and joint. Moreover, spirulina is helpful for specific problems, such as - premenstrual syndrome and weight loss.
Lastly, spirulina is highly effective for heavy metal detox, as the recent research have shown.
The vitamin B12 found in these algae may or may not be usable by the human body. For example, some studies concluded that the vitamin B12 in cyanobacteria does not increase serum B12 levels in human blood, which means that the B12 in cyanobacteria is unmetabolized.
Warning and precaution
Anyone who has come into contact with water containing these type of algae should shower with fresh water as fast as possible.
