Magnesium is an important electrolyte needed for proper muscle, nerve, and enzyme function. Furthermore, magnesium helps the body use energy and is needed to move sodium and potassium into and out of cells.
The mineral is also vital for the structural maintenance and development of healthy bones and even plays an important in the production of glutathione, a chemical which has been called the body’s master antioxidant.
About 28 percent of American adults consume the recommended daily intake of magnesium, and about 20 percent get only half of the magnesium they need daily to remain healthy.
Causes of low magnesium:
A poor diet of processed foods, prescription medications, soil depletion, menopause, excessive intake of soda or caffeine, calcium supplements, heavy metals, and a stressful lifestyle can lead to magnesium deficiency (hypomagnesemia).
If you are deficient in magnesium, you may notice a broad range of signs and symptoms, including:
#1 Anxiety - if you often feel nervous, worried, or uneasy about an uncertain outcome, you should eat more food rich in this mineral.
#2 High blood pressure - this essential mineral works partnered with calcium to protect the heart and to support proper blood pressure. Therefore, when you are magnesium-deficient, usually you are also low in calcium and tend toward high blood pressure.
#3 Muscle spasms and cramps - magnesium is vital for muscle relaxation. Thus, when you lack magnesium, your muscles can involuntarily contract that can cause painful spasms.
#4 Restless legs syndrome(RLS) - it is one of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency. RLS is a neurological condition which causes an overwhelming urge to move the legs.
#5 Numbness - since this mineral impacts your nervous system, numbness can be a warning sign of a deficiency, especially as it worsens.
#6 Insomnia - a magnesium deficiency is commonly a precursor to sleep disorders, such as hyperactivity, anxiety, and restlessness.
#7 Low energy - according to research, too little magnesium makes the body work harder, which ultimately leads to lower energy levels.
#8 Clouded thinking - it may result from a lack of magnesium and can be quickly rectified when eating foods high in magnesium.
#9 Hyperexcitability – this essential mineral is responsible for the regulation of nerve transmission by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine. When you experience a deficiency in magnesium, the nerve impulses are not inhibited. Hence, there is hyperexcitability of cells.
#10 Vomiting and nausea - early signs of magnesium deficiency can include gastrointestinal disturbances., which can lead from a loss of appetite to vomiting and nausea.
Note
Many of the signs and symptoms of low magnesium are not unique to magnesium deficiency, making it difficult to diagnose with 100 percent accuracy. Therefore, frequently, low magnesium levels go completely unrecognized and untreated.
