Salmonellosis is an infection caused by the bacterium Salmonella enterica, which has over 2,000 serotypes (for example Salmonella Typhimurium).
Most recently, a specific type of Salmonella Typhimurium, DT104, has emerged that is resistant to many antibiotics.
Signs can include watery, foul smelling diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever. Dehydration and shock can occur and lead to death; this is most common in young animals.
Approximately 380 people die each year due to Salmonella, according to the CDC.
Worldwide, typhoid fever affects roughly 17 million people annually, causing nearly 600,000 deaths. The causative agent, Salmonella enterica typhi (referred to as Salmonella typhi), is a parasite that has no known natural reservoir outside of humans.
These outbreaks are attributed to contaminated poultry, chicken eggs, and products that contain eggs. Poultry eggs can contain Salmonella bacteria both on the surface as well as inside.
Salmonellosis can affect many animal species including birds, reptiles and amphibians.
For this reason, it is recommended that reptiles or amphibians are not kept in households with children under 5 years old, or anyone with a weakened immune system.
Hand washing is a powerful way to guard against Salmonella infections.
Daniel Elmer Salmon was the American Veterinarian who discovered the bacteria.
