Mirabilis Jalapa plant, also known as the marvel of Peru and four o’clock flower, is available in a many different colors and cultivated in gardens. In addition, this flower has been recorded on waste ground and around habitation areas.
There are 45 species in the Mirabilis genus of herbs and a single flower can be pink or white, plain yellow, or have a combination of flakes, sectors, and spots. However, it is usually red, crimson or orange, and starts to open like clockwork from 4 pm. This plant has been exported from the Peruvian Andes starting 1540. The plants are erect and spreading, 2-3 ft tall and just as wide.
Medicinal uses of Mirabilis Jalapa
The plant is known for its antiseptic, purgative, and diuretic properties. The roots of the plant are believed to be an aphrodisiac and the seeds poisonous. For candida and viruses use one-half cup of root infusion or 1-2 ml of tincture.
Furthermore, the juice of the root is used in the treatment of indigestion, diarrhea, fevers and to treat scabies and muscular swellings. More importantly, a decoction is used to treat abscesses. Leaf juice may be used to treat wounds and dropsy (accumulation of excess water).
According to a recent chemical analysis of the plant, it is rich in many active plant substances, such as - proteins, flavonoids, steroids, triterpenes, and alkaloids.
