10 Signs and Symptoms of Hernia In Women And Men

A hernia occurs when there is a hole or weakness in the muscular wall which usually keeps abdominal organs in place. Hernias can happen in the abdomen, the groin, and the diaphragm.

The most common forms of hernia are - inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, femoral hernia, and hiatal (hiatus) hernia. Other types of hernias include - epigastric hernia, incisional hernia, spigelian hernia, and diaphragmatic hernia.

More than 1 million abdominal wall hernia repairs are performed every year in the US, with inguinal hernia repairs constituting about 770,000 of these cases.

An inguinal hernia occurs when a part of the bowel or fatty tissue squeezes through the abdominal wall into the groin area. This type of hernia is usually associated with straining of the abdomen or aging.

While some hernias have no symptoms, the majority of hernias will have one or more of the following:

#1 Discomfort or pain in the affected area (usually the lower abdomen), particularly when bending over, lifting, or coughing.

#2 A heavy feeling in the abdomen which is occasionally accompanied by blood in the stool or constipation.

#3 Red skin around the hernia.

#4 Referred pain - if the hernia irritates, damages, or inflames nearby nerves, the pain felt from the hernia may not be at the area of the hernia, but rather at the area to which these nerves are traveling.

#5 A swollen or an enlarged scrotum in boys or men.

#6 Sometimes, pain around the testicles when the protruding intestine descends into the scrotum.

#7 An obvious swelling beneath the skin of the abdomen or the groin. This swelling may disappear when you lie down and may be tender.

#8 Although heartburn is more often in patients with a hiatus hernia, some have no symptoms at all.

#9 The feeling that something has ruptured.

#10 A sports hernia is a tear or strain of any tissue in the lower abdomen or groin. It causes pain in the groin or inguinal area.
